Recent flyers promoting Kwabena Agyapong’s bid for the position of National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have raised significant concerns among those familiar with his troubling past. This write-up is a warning to the NPP: Kwabena Agyapong’s track record of betrayal, weakness, and self-interest disqualifies him from leadership. His actions during critical moments of the party’s history exposed him as the weakest link—an individual whose selfishness and instability caused far-reaching consequences, weakening the party and leaving deep scars.

A Legacy of Betrayal and Exploitation

Kwabena Agyapong’s role in the removal of Paul Afoko, then National Chairman of the NPP, remains one of the most damaging episodes in the party’s history. When Freddie Blay attempted to declare Afoko’s suspension and his own ascension to Acting Chairman through a letter to the Electoral Commission (EC), the EC rejected it, stating that they did not recognize Freddie Blay’s authority. Sensing an opportunity, the coup plotters turned to Kwabena Agyapong, whom they identified as the weakest link.

Kwabena Agyapong’s weakness and self-interest had devastating consequences for the NPP. His betrayal of both Afoko and Crabbe shattered trust within the party’s leadership and created divisions that lingered long after the coup.

Fact

The plotters assured Kwabena that their target was solely Paul Afoko and that he would be spared if he cooperated. In a moment of cowardice and desperation, Kwabena capitulated.
He signed the letter declaring Afoko’s suspension and personally delivered it to him, betraying his colleague and violating the principles of the party’s constitution. To this day, Afoko refuses to engage with him, a testament to the depth of the betrayal. Kwabena’s selfish actions did not stop there. He publicly announced Afoko’s suspension on national television, cementing his complicity in the plot. This betrayal had far-reaching consequences. It emboldened the coup plotters to suspend countless executives who
opposed their actions, creating chaos and disunity within the party. Kwabena’s inability to stand his ground and uphold the constitution not only destabilized the NPP but also weakened it significantly during a crucial period.

A Dangerous Instability

Kwabena Agyapong’s actions demonstrated not only a lack of principle but also a dangerous instability that made him an easy target for manipulation. He was exploited repeatedly by the coup plotters, who used him to achieve their goals and discarded him when he was no longer useful. After enabling Freddie Blay to assume the role of Acting Chairman, Kwabena himself was suspended alongside Sammy Crabbe, further underscoring his expendability.
Even in court, Kwabena’s instability and lack of resolve were on full display. After swearing an affidavit in support of Afoko’s case challenging his suspension, Kwabena abandoned him at the crucial moment by refusing to testify in person. This betrayal further solidified his reputation as a man incapable of standing firm under pressure—a liability to those who
counted on him.

The Consequences of Selfishness

Kwabena Agyapong’s weakness and self-interest had devastating consequences for the NPP. His betrayal of both Afoko and Crabbe shattered trust within the party’s leadership and created divisions that lingered long after the coup. Countless executives were suspended,
leaving the party in a weakened state. Even Nana Akufo-Addo, who benefitted from Kwabena’s complicity, recognized his instability and lack of principle, never trusting him enough to offer a substantive role in his administration. Kwabena has since been relegated to the political periphery, his influence reduced to near irrelevance.

A Campaign of Deception

Today, Kwabena Agyapong is attempting to rewrite history as he campaigns for the position of National Chairman. He has portrayed himself as a victim of the very plot he actively facilitated, seeking to distance himself from the betrayal while blaming others, including Nana Akufo-Addo and his allies. This calculated narrative is designed to elicit sympathy and position himself as a leader, but the facts tell a different story.
Kwabena’s ambition to become chairman is both hypocritical and dangerous. After playing a central role in desecrating the integrity of the chairman’s seat, he now seeks to occupy it. This is not an act of redemption but a blatant attempt to exploit the party’s goodwill for personal gain.

A Stark Reminder for the NPP

The story of Kwabena Agyapong is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by weak and selfish leaders who enable betrayal within the party. Had Kwabena stood his ground and supported the party’s constitution instead of acting out of selfishness and desperation, the outcome would have been different. His actions destabilized the party, weakened its leadership, and created lasting divisions.
The NPP must reject Kwabena’s attempts to exploit sympathy and rewrite history to further his ambitions. It is imperative that this story be told in its entirety. Kwabena’s actions, his betrayal, and his inability to stand firm under pressure must be remembered as a cautionary tale.
By exposing the truth, the party can ensure that such damaging episodes do not repeat themselves, safeguarding the integrity and vision of the NPP for the future. Kwabena Agyapong’s past actions disqualify him from holding any position of trust within the party.
The NPP must ensure that its leadership is entrusted to individuals of proven loyalty, stability, and integrity, rejecting those who have betrayed its trust.
